Cottage
Accessory Dwelling Unit

This charming little backyard cottage (also known as an accessory dwelling unit) nestles into the wonderful, old fashioned neighborhood of Black Rock/ Bridgeport, CT. The little building is sited amongst mature gardens in this water front community

The cottage was created to initially supplement the primary homeowner’s income, as they approach retirement age, and then to, eventually, move into the cottage and rent out their main house, providing long-term financial security for them.

The design borrows aesthetic elements from fairytale cottages in the forest. The elements include a natural, winding stone pathway and outdoor irregular bluestone terrace, whimsical copper sconces, at the welcoming front door, with etched hummingbirds in the glass.  There is a comfortably scaled, two story open living/ dining/ kitchen space with a rustic stone fireplace, distressed wood barn beams, concealed uplighting and a Craftsman styled stair with built-in bookcases and storage closet below. The cottage was designed with two comfortable bedrooms, a surprising amount of storage (for such a small home), one and a half baths, a compact laundry and pantry closet.

The clients are very happy with their fairytale cottage. They found a long term tenant four days after putting the cottage on the rental market.
